Dress Code

BOARD POLICY NO. 544

It is the expectation of the Board of Trustees of the Winters Joint Unified School District that a positive, safe learning environment and climate be reflected in the appearance of the student body and staff. Dress and grooming should reflect moderation and be appropriate for the school activities in which they are engaged. The appearance of staff and students shall promote a positive and safe learning environment during school hours and school activities both on and off campus. High standards of dress promote good citizenship. The Board of Trustees takes pride in the appearance of our students and staff.

 

The following guidelines shall apply to all regular school activities:

 

· Clothing should cover the student from the mid-sternum to the mid thigh and should be sufficient to cover undergarments at all times. (See-through or fishnet fabrics, halter tops, off-the-shoulder, strapless, or low-cut tops, spaghetti straps, muscle under-shirts, exposed cleavage, bare midriffs and shirts or shorts shorter than the mid-thigh are prohibited).

· To ensure the safety of all students without causing a distraction in class all clothing should be appropriately sized.

· The exposure of underwear is prohibited.

· Straps on overalls must be attached, not hanging down.

· Belts must be in belt loops and not hanging down in front of pants.

· Hats will not be worn inside school classroom (unless it is permitted by the individual teacher).

· Shoes must be worn at all times.

· Clothing, jewelry and personal items shall be free of writing, pictures or symbols which makes reference to the use of tobacco, alcohol, drugs, and which display: profanity, vulgarity, violence, illegal behavior, gang affiliation, or any offensive reference.

 

Consequences for Dress Code Violations

 

First Offense

Teacher or staff member will send student to the office.  Removal or changing of inappropriate clothing will be required. A one hour detention may be assigned with parent notification.

Second Offense

Teacher or staff member will send the student to the office. Removal or changing of inappropriate clothing will be required. A one hour detention will be assigned.

Third Offense

Teacher or staff member will send the student to the office.  Removal or changing of inappropriate clothing will be required.  One day of Extended Day Placement will be assigned and a parent conference will be requested.

 

Any further offenses will result in suspension from school for defiance of authority.

 

Winters Joint Unified School District reserves the right to amend this policy without immediate  notification to students and parents.
